To advertise in China, start with the customer you want to reach and the action your company can support. The best first brief is not “put us on every Chinese platform”. It identifies an offer, a buyer, a usable destination and the team responsible for the response.
For a US company, the challenge includes Chinese buyer language, account readiness and coordination across teams. This guide shows how to choose a starting route without confusing advertising, PR, creator projects and longer-term business development.
Choose by buyer intent, not a Western platform analogy
Calling Baidu “China’s Google” or Douyin “China’s TikTok” can provide a quick orientation, but it does not establish equivalent targeting, inventory or account access. Specify the local platform and actual campaign requirements in the proposal.
The table below is a planning framework, not a ranking of platforms or a guarantee of audience fit. Your offer and account eligibility decide which route is practical.
| Buyer situation | Route to evaluate | Preparation |
|---|---|---|
| Searching for a supplier or solution | Baidu search advertising | Chinese query clusters and an intent-matched page |
| Needs ongoing explanation or interaction | WeChat advertising and content | Placement, destination and response owner |
| Wants product discovery and comparison | REDnote content and ads | Useful notes, product facts and rights |
| Responds to video demonstration | Douyin feed or search ads | Native video and a measurable action |
| Needs brand or company context | PR and media execution | Localised material and publication scope |
Make one offer clear on the landing page
Show what you provide, who it is suitable for, the important conditions and what happens after contact. For B2B, explain the application and information needed for a quotation. For a service, explain scope, geography and the next step.
A general company page may establish breadth, but paid traffic needs a clear connection between the ad promise and the page. Place optional platforms and later support after the primary service and price information rather than competing with the first action.
Plan the total cost, not only the media spend
PPCOps management starts at USD 800 per platform per month for Standard execution or USD 1,500 for Professional operations. Select one management level. Account support, media funding, Chinese pages, production, creators and publishing should be named separately.
Standalone account-opening support starts at USD 300 and may be waived within an agreed package. PPCOps currently lists initial media funding from USD 7,500 per platform for entities registered outside mainland China, subject to eligibility and the agreed route. It is an offer condition, not a universal minimum across China’s platforms.
If your budget cannot support the eligible route and the required preparation, discuss a narrower content or research question first. Do not divide a small budget across several unfinished campaigns.
Prepare the operating handover
Time zones and language become a practical problem when nobody owns the incoming response. Decide who reviews Chinese materials, who receives enquiries and how questions are escalated to your technical or commercial team.
For agency-led work, establish the approval and reporting format before launch. PPCOps can support local execution while the overseas agency retains the end-client relationship. Access and responsibilities should be explicit, not inferred from the platform name.
Record what happened after the click
A useful measurement plan separates ad clicks, contact-button clicks, confirmed form submissions and lead quality. Preserve campaign identifiers where available and permitted. A WhatsApp click is not proof that a message was sent; a raw form is not proof of a relevant opportunity.
Ask the provider how website enquiry records connect to analytics, how test traffic is excluded and how missing attribution is reported. Evaluate your first campaign using both delivery data and the actual enquiries your sales team receives.
Add commercial support when the evidence justifies it
L1 and L2 cover advertising execution and Professional operations respectively. L2 uses industry information and enquiry-quality feedback from the brand or optional L3. L3 is human telephone confirmation of lead quality only.
Following the initial L1–L3 work, suitable projects can discuss L4 local sales representation and business follow-up, or L5 distributor, agent and channel support. PR, content and account operations remain separate services; they do not disappear into a compulsory five-level package.
Your first China advertising brief
A short, specific brief is enough to start a scope discussion. It should make clear whether you need campaign execution, brand communication or a controlled market-entry test.
- Company website and registration country.
- One priority product or service and target customer.
- Target China region and how customers can buy or enquire.
- Chinese materials, account access and creative already available.
- Total budget range, timing and internal approval owner.
- Who will respond to leads and provide quality feedback.
Frequently asked questions
Should a US company start with every Chinese advertising platform?
No. Select the smallest eligible set that matches buyer intent and can be supported with content, budget and follow-up.
Does PR replace paid advertising?
No. PR and media publishing can support communication and credibility, while paid campaigns buy distribution toward a defined objective. Report their deliverables separately.
Can our global team provide creative?
Yes, but Chinese messaging, platform format, claims and asset rights still need to be checked. Specify adaptation and approval responsibilities.
Which page should I use to compare service prices?
Use the PPCOps pricing page for current starting fees, funding conditions and optional services; the final proposal defines the actual scope.
